Who is Responsible for Monitoring the Deep Geological Repository (DGR)?
Monitoring the Deep Geological Repository (DGR) is a multi-tiered responsibility designed to uphold the highest standards of safety, environmental stewardship, and community well-being. Here’s an overview of how monitoring is conducted:
1. DeepGEO Labrador and Operational Partners:
- As the primary operator of the DGR, we are responsible for day-to-day monitoring, routine safety checks, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards. We may form a joint venture with Indigenous organizations to become the primary operator at some point in the future as well.
2. Regulatory Agencies:
- National and international agencies specializing in nuclear safety and environmental protection periodically review our operations to ensure we are meeting or exceeding safety benchmarks. These reviews may include, but are not limited to, safety audits, waste handling procedures, and emergency preparedness.
3. Third-party Experts:
- Independent experts and scientists are occasionally involved to conduct in-depth analyses, which supplement our own monitoring initiatives. This layer of oversight provides additional assurance to the community and other stakeholders.
4. Community Oversight:
- Recognizing the importance of local community involvement, we are committed to transparency and active community participation. Residents will have opportunities to engage in the oversight process through periodic consultations, site visits, and open forums where they can ask questions and offer input.
5. Investment Trust Fund:
- A portion of the Investment Trust Fund, aimed to grow to $50 billion, will be allocated to sustain long-term monitoring efforts, ensuring that resources are consistently available to maintain safety and compliance well into the future.
By incorporating a comprehensive and multi-layered approach to monitoring, we aim to provide continual assurance that the DGR is operating safely, responsibly, and with the best interests of both human health and the environment in mind.
